Finding Inspiration with Canva: How to Make Personalized Door Signs for Your Home
Updated: Apr 8, 2023
A few months ago, I decided to make door signs for my new apartment. I was excited to start but also anxious and unsure how to approach it. I had some experience with painting and crafting, but I was not confident with lettering. So, I painted a background using acrylics and left it at that. The anxiety was overwhelming, and as much as I wanted to make those signs, I had to shelve the idea at the time.
A few days ago, I felt inspired to try again. This time, I decided to use Canva, a graphic design tool I had been familiar with for a few months.
As I started to use Canva and explore different fonts and design elements, I felt more confident in my ability to create a cool sign.
Canva's user-friendly interface and wide range of tools and templates made the design process much easier and more enjoyable for me. It allowed me to experiment with different fonts, colors, and graphic elements until I found the perfect combination for our signs.
Canva helped me create a design I was truly proud of, which I then printed on regular A4 pages and then transferred to the wooden signs using carbon paper.
Once I transferred the basic design to the wooden signs, I used Posca markers to fill in the text and add outlines. This part of the process was a bit nerve-wracking for me, as I wanted to ensure the letters looked neat and professional. I took my time and used small, careful strokes to fill in the text.
I also added some floral decorations using a stencil and a water-based marker, giving the signs some extra character. Finally, I added accents with washi tape, which my boyfriend helped me choose.
After the decorations were complete, I noticed that the Mod Podge sealer had caused some of the paint to dissolve, leaving me slightly disappointed.
However, I decided to take inspiration from the great Bob Ross, who famously said, "There are no mistakes, only happy accidents."
I used a round sponge to move some of the pigment around and incorporated the "mistake" into the sign's overall design. In the end, it added a bit of character and uniqueness to the signs, which I actually ended up loving.
Once the sealer dried, I used double-sided clear tape to hang the signs. We now have signs for our entrance door, bathroom, office, and bedroom, and I'm really pleased with how they turned out. My boyfriend loves them too!
Overall, I enjoyed the process of making these signs and overcoming my anxiety about lettering. Using Canva helped me feel more confident about my design choices and allowed me to experiment with different elements. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to create graphics and text. It's versatile, easy to use, and fuels my creativity.
I hope this post inspires you to try something new, even if it's outside of your comfort zone. And if you're looking to create your own signs or graphics, I highly recommend giving Canva a try!
Thank you for joining me on this creative journey!
Looks Great!
